This is the 160 hour blended (hybrid) on-line and hands-on program is designed for personnel who will fulfill the functions of a Hazardous Materials Technician. The program involves an initial one – day classroom session, followed by 80 hours of on-line instructor led training and 72 hours of in field hands-on skill building sessions.

This program is based upon “Hazardous Materials Technician” IFSTA 2nd edition which will be provided the first day of class. The program will be presented in 4 separate weeks as outlined below. Upon completion the participant will be eligible to take the Florida State Fire College’s voluntary hazardous materials technician certification examination. The participant must participate in all online sessions and attend all seven days of hands-on to successfully complete the program.

Upon completion of this online program, the Hazardous Materials Technician shall be able to support the Incident Safety Officer by performing the functions of an Assistant Safety Officer: Hazardous Materials (Hazardous Materials Safety Officer). The course participant shall be able to analyze hazards and risks to personnel, develop a site safety and control plan, support the implementation of the plan, monitor the scene activities for deviation from the safety plan and take corrective measures and ensure that the incident is properly terminated.


The “Paramedic Response to Hazardous Material Incident” program is a six-week, instructor led, online educational program designed to provide advanced life support responders and first receivers with insight into the role of providing pre-hospital and emergency department care to victims of hazardous materials incidents. The course includes a study of the role of the emergency care provider, incident risk assessment, a study of toxidromes and their treatment, and how to support for the health and safety of response personnel.
